Brazil born Fernandes played one game for Brazil in 2014. Later he got Russian citizenship from President Vladimir Putin in July last year. He is currently playing for Russian Football Club called CSKA Moscow. FIFA regulations states that if a player is continuously living in that country for at least five years after the age of 18 years, he can get citizenship of that country. On moving to Russia, Fernandes said
I am proud of becoming Russian. Russia became my second home after I had joined CSKA. I want to play for this country’s national team and I will do everything I can to be useful to the club and to the state.
